Winner of the First Prize and Audience Prize at the Trondheim Competition, Scotland’s Maxwell Quartet was honored to be invited by members of the Guarneri Quartet to perform at a 50th Anniversary gala celebration of the Guarneri’s career at the Metropolitan Museum. Rave reviews include ”charisma and sense of adventure” (The New York Times), ”effervescent sound and buoyant energy” (The New Yorker), and ”earthy robustness” (Gramophone). Maxwell has brought their unique juxtaposition of standard repertoire and traditional Scottish music to the Edinburgh Festival, Wigmore Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the BBC Chamber Music Proms, and festivals and venues across North America and Europe.

Maxwell’s collaborators include the Danish String Quartet and American pianist Awadagin Pratt (in Jamaican-British composer Eleanor Alberga’s Piano Quintet). Forthcoming projects include arrangements of 12th century Celtic plainchant ”Women at Work” (folk songs from women’s industries such as tweed-making in the Hebridean Isles) and a commissioned piano quintet by James MacMillan.
